Living well with diabetes: what to know
Diabetes and your nerves (neuropathy)
Over time, high blood sugar and high blood fats can injure nerves and the small blood vessels that feed them. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases says up to half of people with diabetes have nerve damage in the hands and feet.
What it can feel like
Loss of feeling in the feet, burning or shooting pain, or sometimes no signs at all.
What doctors advise
Manage blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol.
Check your feet every day.
Have a healthcare provider examine your feet and nerves at least once a year.
What about supplements?
Research is mixed. Mayo Clinic reports mixed results for alpha-lipoic acid, and the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says the evidence for most supplements and diabetes complications is not enough. If you take metformin, ask your provider whether to check your vitamin B12.
In our collection: Magnesium Glycinate. Its label says it supports nervous system function.*
No supplement is a treatment for nerve damage. Talk with your healthcare provider.

Diabetes, your eyes and your vision
Diabetes can damage the eyes and lead to poor vision or even blindness. Diabetic eye disease includes retinopathy, macular edema, cataracts and glaucoma. Retinopathy harms the blood vessels in the retina, and it may cause no symptoms at first.
What doctors advise
Get a dilated eye exam at least once a year, even if your vision seems fine.
The NIDDK says finding and treating retinopathy early can reduce the risk of blindness by 95%.
What about supplements?
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says a review found no supplement shown to help diabetic retinopathy. Studies of lutein and zinc looked at a different eye condition, age-related macular degeneration.
In our collection: Vision Support, a general eye-health formula.* It does not replace your yearly eye exam.
No supplement can treat or prevent diabetic eye disease. Please keep your yearly eye exam.

Diabetes and erections (ED)
An erection depends on healthy blood vessels and nerves, and diabetes can damage both. Diabetes Canada's clinical guideline estimates erectile dysfunction affects about 34% to 45% of adult men with diabetes. It can also show up before diabetes or heart disease is diagnosed, and it may be an early sign of heart disease.
What doctors advise
Talk with a healthcare provider. Mayo Clinic notes they can look at your overall health, your medicines and your testosterone, and that managing diabetes well may help protect nerves and blood vessels.
Good questions for your appointment
Should my testosterone be tested? The Endocrine Society says low testosterone is more common in men with type 2 diabetes, and it is diagnosed with symptoms plus at least two early-morning blood tests.
Should my vitamin B12 be checked? Mayo Clinic notes that metformin can lower B12.
Everyday support in our collection
Healthy erections rely on healthy blood flow and a healthy heart. These products are for everyday circulation and heart wellness:
Beetroot: supports circulation and heart wellness.*
Omega-3 EPA and DHA: supports heart health.*
CoQ10: supports heart health and cellular energy.*
These are general wellness products, not treatments for erectile dysfunction. Be careful with products sold for sexual enhancement: the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that some contain hidden drugs, and prescription ED medicines can be dangerous with nitrate heart medicines. Talk with your healthcare provider first.

Diabetes and bone strength
Diabetes can make bones more likely to break, even when a bone-density scan looks normal. The Society for Endocrinology reports hip-fracture risk about 30% higher in type 2 diabetes and about five times higher in type 1. Osteoporosis often has no symptoms until a bone breaks, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, which lists diabetes as a risk factor.
What doctors advise
Ask your provider about bone-health screening, especially after age 50 or after any fracture.
Do weight-bearing exercise such as walking.
Eat a balanced diet that includes calcium and vitamin D, and do not smoke.
Where supplements can fit
Calcium and vitamin D are needed for normal bone building. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration allows qualifying calcium supplements to say that adequate calcium throughout life, as part of a well-balanced diet, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis. For example, someone who rarely gets enough calcium from food might ask a provider about calcium together with vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium.
In our collection: Vitamin D3 supports bone, immune and muscle health.*
In our collection: Magnesium Glycinate supports bone and joint health.*
Supplements do not replace medical care. Ask your healthcare provider how much calcium and vitamin D is right for you.
